La política y la metáfora del teatro Politics and theatre metaphor

Resumen

Alo largo de la historia, el poder político se ha representado a sí mismo mediante el uso de un lenguaje metafórico, con imágenes tomadas del mundo teatral. En este trabajo se analizan y comparan las metáforas dramatúrgicas utilizadas en el desarrollo del pensamiento político moderno. Se realiza una especial referencia a dos de las etapas fundamentales en las que la metáfora de 'la vida social y la política como teatro' se impone con gran fuerza: la corte barroca de Luis XIV y la época contemporánea. En la sociedad cortesana barroca se utilizaban el teatro y el ceremonial como una manera de expresar el poder del soberano, con un acotado poder de comunicación. En nuestras sociedades actuales, la mediatización otorgó al político un gran poder de imagen, que refuerza y complejiza esta metáfora, la cual deviene en realidad a varios niveles: por el uso del lenguaje, por los actores involucrados y por el público que sigue el espectáculo político. Abstract

Political power has always presented itself using a metaphorical language, together with images taken from the theatrical world. In this article, multiple theatrical metaphors used in the development of modern political thought are analysed and compared. Specially, the article takes into account two stages in which the metaphor of “the social life and politics as theatre” takes its place with great strength: Louis XVI’s baroque court and the contemporary era. In baroque society, theatre and ceremonial were means to express the monarch’s power, within the limits of a restricted communication power. In today’s society, the growth of the media has provided a greater image power to the politician. This power reinforces and adds complexity to the metaphor, which, in turn, becomes reality in several levels of existence: the uses of language, the political actors involved and the general public that observes the political spectacle.
