El uso que hace el poeta isabelino Edmund Spenser de la tradición clásica es un ejemplo espléndido y sofisticado de reapropiación y resignificación cultural. Su uso del mito de Proteo es uno de los ejemplos más ilustrativos de este fenómeno. En su obra magna, The Faerie Queene (1590-1596) Spenser se vale de los antecedentes de Homero, Virgilio, Eurípides, Ovidio, Boccaccio, Ariosto y otros para modelar un Proteo tan familiar como novedoso. Mesura, temperancia y circunspección por una parte, apasionada incontinencia, mutabilidad mundana e intemperancia por la otra; la miscelánea de cualidades que se pueden adivinar en el antiguo mito del dios cambiante es, sin duda, fascinante. El Proteo spenseriano es una de los rostros más expresivos del hombre del Renacimiento.

Abstract

The Elizabethan poet Edmund Spenser read and utilized classical tradition in a way that constitutes a splendid and sophisticated example of cultural reappropriation and resignification. His use of the myth of Proteus is one of the most eloquent examples of this phenomenon. In his masterpiece, The Faerie Queene (1590-1596), Spenser takes elements from Homer, Vergil, Euripides, Ovid, Boccaccio, Ariosto and others to model a Proteus that is as familiar as it is novel. Measure, temperance and circumspection on the one hand, incontinence, mutability and intemperance on the other: the miscellaneous qualities of this ancient mutating god is indeed fascinating. Spenser’s Proteus is one of the most compelling portraits of the Renaissance man.
