Resumen

Este artículo se propone plantear desde una nueva perspectiva los problemas principales surgidos en torno al enfrentamiento entre Whistler y Ruskin. Una de las variables que no ha sido ponderada suficientemente hasta el momento por la crítica es la noción ruskiniana de pintoresquismo. La hipótesis de este trabajo es que lo que Ruskin vio efectivamente en la obra de Whistler era que el medio de expresión acaparaba el centro de atención del lienzo, lo cual constituía parael crítico uno de los mayores errores en pintura. Mostraremos que el rechazo de Whistler por parte de Ruskin no se acota al plano moral de los conceptos ruskinianos de artista, crítica y economía del arte, sino que está esencialmente fundado en la compleja relación que Ruskin mantiene con el pintoresquismo. Abstract

This paper suggests a new approach to the major problems arisen from the confrontation Whistler v. Ruskin. One of the variables that has not been sufficiently taken into account by critics until now is the ruskinian notion of ‘picturesqueness’. The hypothesis of this study is that what Ruskin actually saw in Whistler’s work was that it was the means of expression which captured the picture’s center of interest. This monopolization was to Ruskin’s eye one of the greatest errors in painting. It will be shown that Ruskin’s rejection of Whistler is not limited to the moral domain of the ruskinian concepts of artist, art criticism and economics, but it is essentially based on the complex relationship that Ruskin has with picturesqueness.
